Block Paving & Gravel Driveways in Shrewsbury & Shropshire

New and replacement block paving and gravel driveways for homes in Shrewsbury, Wem, Oswestry, Telford and Ellesmere – built on a proper base, with the edging and drainage that stop a drive sinking or puddling.

Driveways that stay level and drain properly

A driveway has to carry the weight of cars every day, so the work you can't see matters most: digging out to the right depth, a well-compacted sub-base, firm edging and somewhere for the rainwater to go.

The Green Team lays block paving and gravel driveways, including decorative borders and edging. We don't lay tarmac or resin driveways, so if that's what you're looking for we'll tell you straight away rather than waste your time.

Driveway options

The right choice depends on the length of the drive, how it's used and how the ground drains.

Block paving

A neat, hard-wearing finish in a range of colours and patterns, with contrasting borders if you'd like them. Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if ever needed.

Gravel driveways

Usually the more affordable option, especially over a longer distance, and naturally permeable. Firm edging keeps the gravel in place.

Borders, edging & drainage

Edging that holds the drive together, and channel drains or falls that carry water away from the house and garage.

Paths & front gardens

Matching paths, steps and front-garden areas, with patios in porcelain or sandstone.

Planning a new driveway

Rules and practical points that often affect a driveway:

  • Front gardens: in England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than five square metres in a front garden must be permeable (for example gravel or permeable block paving) or drain onto a lawn or border – otherwise planning permission is needed.
  • Dropped kerbs: a new driveway entrance across the pavement needs permission from the highway authority first – Shropshire Council for Shrewsbury, Wem and Oswestry, and Telford & Wrekin Council for Telford.
  • Conservation areas and listed buildings: if your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with the council before changing front walls, boundaries or driveways.
  • Existing drains and covers: inspection chambers and drains under the drive need to be found and finished at the new level. We look for these at the site visit.

We go through these points at the free site visit, and your fixed written quotation sets out exactly what is included.

Driveway questions

Do you lay tarmac or resin driveways?

No. We lay block paving and gravel driveways only.

Block paving or gravel?

Gravel is usually cheaper and naturally permeable, which suits longer drives. Block paving is tidier, easier to sweep and works well closer to the house. We'll go through both at the site visit.

Do I need planning permission?

Not usually, if the new surface in a front garden is permeable or drains onto a lawn or border. A new dropped kerb needs the council's permission. Listed buildings and conservation areas may have extra rules.

How much does a driveway cost?

It depends on the size, the surface, access, levels and drainage. Our online quote assistant gives a guide price; the final price is confirmed in a fixed written quotation after the free site visit.
